What are primary sources?

Primary sources are direct or first-hand sources of information about an event, object or person. Unlike secondary sources, they are not derived from or based on anything else. Primary sources can take the form of written or oral documents, artwork, and other sources created at the time of the event. While many primary sources are manuscript and unpublished, many other have been edited and published. For further guidance on primary sources and how to find them, see the Learning Skills Hub.
